🇺🇸 Sharon Sara

Six filles, les mains jointes : le dessin d'une élève de CM2 a battu des dizaines de milliers de participants sur la page d'accueil de Google.

Doodle for Google 2020, thème « Je montre ma gentillesse en…

The drawing

The theme Google set that year was a sentence for the entrant to finish: I show kindness by… Sara finished it with a picture rather than a slogan. Together as One shows six girls whose skin colours, hairstyles and clothes are all different, standing with their hands joined. Nothing in the drawing explains itself. The joined hands carry the argument.

Her artist statement, published with the win, is plainer than the picture. “I show kindness by sticking together with my friends in tough times,” she wrote. “I drew people coming together and not thinking about the outside but being together because of their personality.” A fifth-grader had located the contest's entire subject in two sentences.

How a national winner is chosen

Doodle for Google takes entries from students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, and the 2020 round drew tens of thousands of them. The field is then cut in stages. Judges first select 54 grade-group winners, more than ten in each age category. A public vote reduces each grade group to a single finalist. Judges make the last choice among those finalists.

The structure means two separate judgments stood behind the result. A panel had to place Sara's drawing among the 54 it advanced, and a national public vote had to make her the one finalist for her grade group. Only then did the judges choose between the finalists and name a national winner.

What the win paid for

The prize was split between the artist and the institution behind her. Sara received a $30,000 college scholarship. Vaughn Elementary School received a $50,000 technology package. The second figure is the larger of the two, and it is the part that rarely reaches a headline.

That division is unusual among art prizes for children, which mostly end at a certificate and a photograph. A public elementary school in Frisco acquired equipment it had not budgeted for because one of its fifth-graders drew six girls holding hands.

What is documented — and what is not

The Dallas Morning News account is firm on everything that can be checked: the school, the city, the grade, the title of the doodle, the theme, the artist statement and both prize figures. It is the record this page rests on.

It is silent on a good deal else. It gives no date for the day the doodle ran on Google's homepage, names no other finalist and no judge, quotes no member of her family, and states neither an age nor a year of birth. Nothing in the sources gathered here describes what she has done since 2020. Those gaps are left open rather than filled.

Why the contest keeps its winners

Google's homepage is among the most-viewed surfaces on the internet, and for one day each year it is handed to a schoolchild. That is the whole appeal of the contest and the reason tens of thousands of children enter it. The doodle itself is temporary. The scholarship and the school's equipment are not.

It also explains why winners are still being searched for years afterwards. A child whose drawing replaces a corporate logo becomes, for a day, one of the most widely seen artists in the country, and then goes back to a school timetable. For most of them the published record stops at the announcement. This one does too.
