🇯🇵 Taiju Goto

Asian champion at 17, world under-20 silver medallist in 49.23 — the fastest qualifier in the field

2026 World Athletics U20 400m hurdles silver medallist • Asian U20 champion • Won his semifinal in 49.19, the quickest time of the round

Taiju Goto arrived at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene as the Asian U20 champion in the 400 metres hurdles and, at 17, one of the youngest athletes in the event. In the semifinals on 8 August 2026 he won his heat in 49.19 — the fastest time of the round, quicker than the 49.48 run by Czechia's Michal Rada, the 2024 world under-20 silver medallist. In the final the following afternoon he ran 49.23 for silver, behind Rada's European under-20 record of 48.59 and ahead of South Africa's Matodzi Ndou in 49.90.

Sub-50-second 400 metres hurdles running at 17 is rare anywhere in the world. The event demands both a 400-metre engine and hurdling technique that survives oxygen debt, and the physical maturity required usually arrives at 19 or 20. Goto ran 49.19 and 49.23 on consecutive days, which is a narrow spread for an athlete of that age — the semifinal-to-final drop-off in the 400 metres hurdles is often several tenths, and for younger athletes it is often more.

The final was a race he led on paper and lost on the day. Rada, two years older and a world under-20 medallist from Lima in 2024, found 48.59 when the medals were on the line — six tenths of a second faster than the Czech's own semifinal — while Goto ran essentially the same time he had produced 24 hours earlier. In an event this long, an athlete who repeats their form has done nothing wrong; the winner simply did something exceptional.

Japan had a strong championship in the hurdles more broadly. Jeremy Koga took silver in the men's 110 metres hurdles in 12.97, in the final where the American Le'Ezra Brown equalled the world under-20 record with 12.72. Two Japanese hurdles silvers at a single world under-20 championships reflects a federation development programme that has been producing sprint hurdlers consistently for a decade.

Goto's status as Asian U20 champion is the part of his record that predates Eugene, and it is the one that establishes he was not a one-week phenomenon. Continental junior titles in Asia are contested by athletes from China, Japan, India and the Gulf states, and the 400 metres hurdles is a strongly contested event across that group.

Because he is 17, Goto remains age-eligible for the next World Athletics U20 Championships in 2028 — the same structural advantage that Slovenia's Živa Remic has in the 800 metres. Athletes who medal at a world junior championship with an age group still to run are the ones with the clearest short-term path to improving on the result. Nothing about that is a guarantee: the historical pattern in the 400 metres hurdles is that the athletes who dominate at 17 do not always dominate at 19, because the event rewards a kind of strength that arrives on its own schedule.

Two sub-50-second runs on consecutive days at 17, one of them the fastest qualifying time in the field, at a championship where the winner needed a European record to beat him. The Asian U20 title establishes that the form predates the week in Eugene.

The honest framing: this is a silver medal, not a gold, and his final was 0.04 slower than his semifinal — he held his level rather than raising it. The record here is consistency at an unusually young age, not a breakthrough time.
