🇨🇿 Michal Rada

Won world under-20 silver at 17 — then came back and broke the European under-20 record

2026 World Athletics U20 400m hurdles champion • European U20 record of 48.59 • World U20 silver medallist at 17, Lima 2024

In 2024, at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, a 17-year-old Czech named Michal Rada finished second in the 400 metres hurdles. Junior silver medallists at that age usually take one of two paths: they either progress steadily and quietly, or they disappear. On 9 August 2026, on the final day of the World U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Rada returned to the same championship, won it, and ran 48.59 — a European under-20 record. He had qualified through the semifinals with 49.48 and, by his own description, the final was run into a headwind against a world-class field.

The 400 metres hurdles is the event where technique and endurance are hardest to hold together. Ten barriers over a full lap force an athlete to fix a stride pattern in advance and then execute it while the legs are failing; almost every athlete switches to their weaker leading leg somewhere after the seventh hurdle. Times under 49 seconds at under-20 level are rare enough that they typically belong to athletes who go on to senior finals. Rada's 48.59 is the fastest ever run by a European under-20.

He was not the only teenager in the medals. Japan's Taiju Goto, the Asian U20 champion, ran 49.23 for silver at 17 — the same age Rada had been when he took silver in Lima two years earlier — and South Africa's Matodzi Ndou took bronze in 49.90. Goto had won his semifinal in 49.19, faster than Rada's qualifying round; the final reversed that order by more than half a second, which is a large margin in a race of this length.

The conditions were against the times rather than for them. Rada described the race afterwards as super hard because of the headwind and the quality of the field, and called the result the sweetest reward he could have had. He also described seeing his family crying in the stands and going over to them, and said the medal was half theirs. Those are the only personal details he offered publicly, and they are the only ones recorded here.

The two-year arc from Lima to Eugene is the part of the record that carries information. A 17-year-old who medals at a world junior championship has, at minimum, competitive nerve; the question is always whether the physical development that follows can be converted rather than merely absorbed. Rada answered it by improving into a continental record in the same age category, against a stronger field, on a slower day.

What the record does not settle is the senior comparison. The 400 metres hurdles has been transformed at senior level by the current generation, where the global standard sits several seconds below 48.59 and finals are decided under 47. European under-20 records in this event have historically been a reasonable but not reliable predictor of senior success — the transition claims athletes for reasons that have little to do with junior form. Rada's next two seasons, against adults, are what will decide the case.

“It was a super hard race because of the headwind, and the competitors were world class. This is the sweetest reward I could have. It was amazing — winning a gold medal and then seeing my family crying, I knew I had to go over to them. This medal is half for them.”

The value here is the two-year interval. A junior silver at 17 is common; converting it into a continental record and a world title in the same age group two years later is not, because the intervening period is when most hurdlers stall. The 48.59 was also run in a headwind against a field in which the silver medallist had been faster in the semifinals — the improvement was made when it counted rather than in a heat.

The caution is scale. Senior 400 metres hurdles finals are currently decided several seconds faster than this, and the event's junior-to-senior conversion rate is poor. A European under-20 record is a strong signal within its category and a weak one outside it.
