Patrick Collison grew up on a farm outside Dromineer, a village in County Tipperary so small it barely registers on most maps — a place of limestone walls, grey skies, and a population that numbered in the hundreds. He taught himself to program on a hand-me-down computer before he was ten, working through manuals and documentation with the unhurried obsession that would later become his signature mode. By the time he was twelve, he had written software programs for local businesses. By the time he was sixteen, he had left Ireland for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he enrolled as an undergraduate student in physics and mathematics. He was so young that MIT required his parents to sign additional consent forms.

He did not stay at MIT for long, but not because he was struggling. He left to build things. His first serious company, Auctomatic, was a software platform for eBay power sellers that he built with his younger brother John and two cofounders. The company was acquired in March 2008 by Live Current Media, a Canadian company, for $5 million in cash and stock. Patrick was nineteen. The acquisition was minor by the standards of Silicon Valley exits, but it was not the point. The point, he would later explain, was that he and John had proven they could build something people would pay for, and they had learned, in the blunt school of execution, everything they had not yet learned about running a company.

The idea for Stripe came from a frustration so widely shared that it had become background noise: accepting payments on the internet was absurdly difficult. If you wanted to build a product that charged customers money, you needed to navigate the opaque bureaucracy of merchant accounts, payment gateways, fraud systems, and bank partnerships. Developers — the exact people who might build the next generation of internet companies — spent weeks just getting payments working. Patrick and John believed the problem was solvable with a better API. They were right. Stripe launched in 2010 and offered developers seven lines of code to accept credit cards. The product spread immediately through word of mouth in the developer community. It was, by any measure, exactly what had been needed.

Stripe's growth was astonishing not because of aggressive sales but because it was genuinely better than anything else available. The company was backed early by Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and Sequoia Capital, which brought credibility and capital. But its expansion was driven primarily by the testimony of engineers who had used it and found that it actually worked — that it handled edge cases, updated its documentation promptly, and responded to support requests from individual developers as if their problems mattered. Patrick remained CEO as the company scaled from a tool used by small startups to infrastructure used by Amazon, Google, Ford, and the majority of the Fortune 500. By 2021, Stripe had a private market valuation of $95 billion, making it the most valuable private company in the United States.

Patrick has also become one of the more intellectually unusual figures in technology. He reads widely across history, philosophy, and science, and his public writing and interviews are notable for their depth and careful sourcing. In 2019, he co-founded the Stripe Press, a publishing imprint that produces books on economic history and innovation. He has also co-founded Arcadia, a project that funds scientific research in ways he believes existing institutions cannot. He is deeply concerned with what he calls "progress studies" — the question of why some societies and periods generate more innovation than others, and what institutional conditions make rapid scientific advancement possible. It is not the hobby of someone who has done well and is looking for something meaningful to do with the money. It reads as a genuine intellectual project, pursued with the same methodical intensity he brought to building Stripe from a farm in Tipperary.
