🇨🇦 Clairey Lin

At 16 she led the U.S. Girls' Junior from the first tee shot to the last and won it 5 and 4

77th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship, Old Chatham Golf Club, Durham, North Carolina, 18 July 2026 • stroke-play medallist at 13-under 131 • beat Amelie Zalsman 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final • second consecutive Canadian champion

The U.S. Girls' Junior is a hybrid: 36 holes of stroke play to seed the field, then six rounds of match play, the last of them over 36 holes. Winning it from the top seed is unusual, because the stroke-play medallist is exposed to every giant-killer in the draw and has to survive five days of one-off matches after already playing the best golf in the field. Clairey Lin did it. The 16-year-old from Langley, British Columbia, qualified as medallist at 13-under 131 and closed out Amelie Zalsman 5 and 4 in the final at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, on 18 July 2026.

The stroke-play rounds set the tone. Lin shot 66 and 65 for a 36-hole total of 131, thirteen under par — one stroke off the championship record and tied for the second-lowest qualifying score in the tournament's 77-year history. She was the first stroke-play medallist to go on and win the whole thing since 2021, which is the statistic that captures how rarely form survives the format.

Match play is a different game from the one the qualifying rounds measure. Scores reset every morning; a player three shots better over 36 holes can lose to someone who holes two long putts and wins on the seventeenth. The 36-hole final adds a further variable, endurance, and finals have been lost by players who led at lunch. Lin closed hers out with four holes to spare.

The championship is one of the two flagship junior events run by the United States Golf Association, and its winners' list is a reliable early index of the professional game: Aree Song, Lexi Thompson, Inbee Park and Minjee Lee all appear on it. Lin's win made Canada the champion nation for a second consecutive year, after Aphrodite Deng took the 2025 title in Georgia — a first back-to-back for Canada in an event dominated historically by American and Korean juniors.

Lin was born in British Columbia and now trains in California, a common path for junior golfers from the Canadian west coast, where the season is short and the competitive fields are thin. Golf Canada, which supports the national junior squad, reported the win as a national result; the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Golf Channel and the USGA all carried the final independently.

The margin in the final understates how close the tournament was to going differently. Lin's opponent, Amelie Zalsman of St Petersburg, Florida, had come through the same bracket, and match play at this level is decided by short stretches rather than whole rounds. What separated them was that Lin's putting held across five consecutive days on greens that had already been played hard.

Asked afterwards what the win meant, Lin said she had always wanted to be on the big stage, inspire some people, work hard and see it pay off, and that being able to do that was amazing. She is sixteen, has amateur eligibility ahead of her, and has now won the deepest junior girls' championship in the world from the front.

The U.S. Girls' Junior is the deepest junior girls' championship in golf and its format punishes the player who qualifies first. Clairey Lin qualified first anyway — with the second-lowest 36-hole score in the event's history — and then won six matches to take the title, something no medallist had managed in five years. Its winners' list is where the modern women's game begins.
