🇮🇹 Alizee Ribolzi

She led from 800 metres out and never let the field back into the race

Under 19 world champion, women's single sculls, Plovdiv, 9 August 2026 • won by a convincing margin • Italy's flagship result of the regatta

The single scull is rowing's honest event: one athlete, two oars, nobody to blame and nobody to carry. At the 2026 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on 9 August, Alizee Ribolzi of Italy took the lead in the Under 19 women's single sculls at around the 800-metre mark and, in World Rowing's own words, never looked back. She won the world title by a convincing margin. Behind her, the race for the remaining medals came down to a hundredth of a second.

Leading from 800 metres is a specific tactical choice and a risky one. The standard shape of a 2,000-metre single sculls race is a fast start, a settled middle thousand and a sprint over the last 500, with most scullers content to sit within a length of the leader until the final quarter. Going clear in the second 500 means racing alone for more than half the distance with no one to pace against and a headwind of expectation — and it means that if the sprint comes, it comes at you. Ribolzi's did not arrive.

The fight behind her illustrates how tight the rest of the field was. Switzerland's Olivia Leunig started steadily and pulled clear of the chasers to take silver. Greece's Paschalina Mouratidou edged Germany's Leoni Hauschild for bronze by a single hundredth of a second — the smallest margin the timing system can separate. Fifth was the Individual Neutral Athlete Viktoryia Halaskok, and sixth the People's Republic of China's Yufei Guan, who at sixteen was by some distance the youngest sculler in the final and whom World Rowing singled out for particular credit.

That last detail is worth stating plainly rather than glossing: at an Under 19 championship, being sixteen is a genuine disadvantage, and Guan's sixth place against a field of older scullers was in its own way as notable as the win. Ribolzi's victory was over the best of an age group whose upper end has two or three more years of physical development, which is the version of the race that actually happened rather than the flattering one.

The single is also the boat that most directly predicts a senior career, because it cannot be improved by putting the athlete in a better crew. Federations use junior single sculls results as a primary selection signal for exactly that reason. A convincing world title in the class marks Ribolzi as the outstanding junior sculler of her year, with the caveat that the transition to the senior single — where the same race is contested by Olympic finalists in their late twenties — is one of the steepest in the sport.

Italy left Plovdiv with a strong regatta: Ribolzi's single sculls gold, the women's pair world title and world best time won by Carolina Cassani and Letizia Martorana, and silver in the inaugural Under 19 mixed double sculls. Across four days, 660 athletes from 55 nations raced 14 boat classes, and sixteen crews were crowned world champions.

The single scull removes every variable except the athlete. There is no crew to lift a weaker rower and no coxswain to steer or pace; the result is a direct measurement. Winning the Under 19 world title in the single, from the front, against a field that includes scullers up to three years older, is the strongest single indicator available at junior level of a genuine senior prospect, which is why national federations weight it so heavily in selection.

The counterweight is that junior single sculls titles have a mixed conversion record. The senior women's single is one of the deepest events in Olympic rowing, contested by athletes at full physical maturity with a decade of training behind them, and the gap is measured in tens of seconds rather than fractions. A dominant junior year is a necessary condition for that transition, not a sufficient one. On the evidence of Plovdiv, Ribolzi has cleared the necessary part convincingly.
