Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO and Facebook founder

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, in a house where intellectual achievement was unremarkable because it was expected. His father Edward was a dentist who built a computerized appointment system for his practice; his mother Karen was a psychiatrist. Mark learned BASIC at age twelve from a tutor his father hired after watching him exhaust the software tutorials. He learned quickly enough that the tutor admitted there was nothing left to teach. At thirteen he wrote ZuckNet, a messaging program that connected his father's dental practice to the family home. At fifteen he built a music player called Synapse that used machine learning to predict what songs you would want to hear next. Winamp and AOL reportedly made purchase offers. He was in high school.

He arrived at Harvard in 2002 with a perfect score on the SAT Math section and a reputation as a programming prodigy. In his second year he built Facemash, a site that pulled photos from Harvard house directories and let users rate students' attractiveness in head-to-head matchups. The administration shut it down in two days. Zuckerberg faced disciplinary charges. But within months he had pivoted the insight — that students wanted to see and connect with each other online — into something with more dignity and far more consequence. On February 4, 2004, he launched TheFacebook.com from his dorm room in Kirkland House. Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students had registered. Within a month, more than half of Harvard's undergraduate population had profiles.

The expansion was relentless. Columbia, Stanford, Yale. Then the Ivy League. Then any college with a .edu email address. Then high schools. Then everyone. In 2004, Zuckerberg moved the operation to Palo Alto, dropped out of Harvard, and signed a deal with PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel for $500,000 in seed funding. Sean Parker, the Napster founder who had disrupted the music industry, became president and pushed Zuckerberg to think bigger — not as a college network but as a global social infrastructure. "The facebook" dropped the "the." Facebook launched to the general public in 2006. By 2008 it had surpassed Myspace as the world's largest social network. By 2012, when it went public at a $104 billion valuation, it was the largest IPO in technology history.

The company's trajectory from startup to global utility generated challenges that seemed to multiply as the user count grew. The acquisition of Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion — mocked at the time as overpriced — became one of the greatest deals in technology history. WhatsApp followed in 2014 for $19 billion. Together, the Meta family of apps connected more than three billion people. But scale brought scrutiny. The Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, in which a political data firm harvested the Facebook data of 87 million users without their consent, precipitated a moment of existential reckoning. Zuckerberg testified before the United States Senate and the House of Representatives — a two-day spectacle that laid bare both the company's power and the government's limited understanding of it.

Controversies accumulated: accusations that Facebook's algorithm amplified outrage and misinformation to maximize engagement; evidence that Instagram was damaging to teenage girls' mental health; the role of the platform in events from the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar to the January 6 Capitol riots. Zuckerberg's response was characteristically technical — systems problems required systems solutions. Trust and Safety teams were scaled. Independent oversight boards were created. The company banned the sitting President of the United States from its platforms in January 2021.

The pivot to Meta in 2021 — renaming the company and committing tens of billions of dollars to building the metaverse — was the boldest and most controversial bet of Zuckerberg's career. Investors recoiled as losses mounted. The stock fell over 70 percent in 2022. But then came the AI turn: Meta released the LLaMA open-source language model, poured resources into generative AI, and watched its stock triple in 2023 as advertising revenue and AI features drove a dramatic recovery. The man in the grey T-shirt who had testified before Congress looking stiff and uncertain had found his footing again. Mark Zuckerberg, at 40, was running one of the world's most valuable companies and appeared to have no intention of stepping down.

"The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that's changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks."

The Facebook Story — Origins and Growth

The Architect of the Social Internet

Before Facebook, the internet was largely a read-only medium — you consumed content that professionals or institutions published. Zuckerberg's insight was that the most compelling content on the internet would be content about people you know. That insight, executed at scale, produced the social web: a global layer of identity, communication, and community that billions of people navigate daily.

The consequences — positive and negative — are still being tabulated. Facebook connected separated families, organized revolutions, and gave billions of people a platform they never had. It also concentrated surveillance capitalism at unprecedented scale, amplified political polarization, and played contested roles in elections and ethnic violence. Zuckerberg occupies the uncomfortable position of having built something genuinely transformative whose effects on democracy and mental health remain deeply disputed.

What is not disputed is his persistence. He has survived scandals that would have ended other CEOs, pivoted through the mobile revolution, the AI revolution, and the metaverse gamble, and remains at the helm of a company with more daily users than any nation has citizens. At 40, he is still at the beginning of his story.
