🇬🇧 Ioan Hepburn

Two rainbow jerseys in four days, and he did not lose a single round of the sprint

UCI Junior Track World Championships 2026, Heusden-Zolder, Belgium • men's sprint and men's keirin gold, plus team sprint silver

The sprint and the keirin are both won on a track, on the same bike, over roughly the same distance, and almost nobody wins both at a world championship. The sprint is a duel: two riders, tactics, a standing start that can last a minute of near-stationary bluffing. The keirin is a scrum: six riders behind a motorised pacer, one lap of chaos after it pulls off. At Heusden-Zolder in August 2026, in what was his last junior world championships, Ioan Hepburn of Wales won both for Great Britain.

The flying 200-metre qualifier is the entry exam of the sprint, and Hepburn passed it fastest in the field with 9.811 seconds — the only rider in the competition under 9.9. Qualifying fastest earns the easiest first-round match and, more importantly, tells the rest of the draw who has the legs. From there the format is a knockout of best-of-three duels.

He did not need a third ride at any stage. In the semi-final he beat Korea's Hajin Jeon 2-0. In the gold medal final he beat Italy's Matteo Ghirelli, winning both rides, and finished the whole sprint competition without losing a single round. In a discipline where the world's best regularly get taken to a decider by riders they should beat, going through unbeaten in every heat is the rarer statistic.

The keirin, two days later, was not so tidy — and that is worth saying, because the two golds are not equivalent. He finished second in his opening round, which sent him to the repechage rather than straight through. He won that, then the second round, then the semi-final, and took the final by three tenths of a second. Three tenths in a keirin is roughly two bike lengths: comfortable, but not the walkover the sprint had been.

He also rode the team sprint with Charlie Holt and Kristian Larigo. Great Britain were the defending champions, qualified second fastest in 45.212 seconds and reached the gold medal ride, but could not retain the title and took silver. Hepburn's own contribution to that squad had precedent — he won team sprint gold at both the 2025 junior world championships and the 2025 European junior championships.

He is Welsh, part of a five-rider Welsh contingent inside the sixteen-strong Great Britain squad, and he arrived in Belgium fresh from making his Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2026. Welsh Cycling's report on the championships called it a spectacular final junior worlds. Great Britain finished the five days with four golds, two silvers and two bronzes; Hepburn had half the golds himself, with the women's team pursuit and Dan Thompson's individual pursuit accounting for the rest.

The caveat is the standard one for junior track cycling and it is a real one. The junior category is under-19, the gearing is restricted compared with senior racing, and the sprint disciplines in particular are won by riders whose power output is still years from its ceiling. A double junior world title is a strong indicator of raw speed and of race craft; it is not a senior result, and the transition from junior to elite sprinting has ended a great many promising careers. No age is published for Hepburn in the sources consulted here and none is asserted, though this was described as his final junior championships.

Winning both the sprint and the keirin at the same championship is rare because they reward opposite things — a controlled two-rider duel and a six-rider scramble. Hepburn won the sprint without dropping a round after qualifying fastest, and the keirin the harder way, through the repechage. Junior track racing uses restricted gearing and the junior-to-elite transition in sprinting is where most careers stall, so this is a marker of speed and race craft, not a senior result.
