James Clerk Maxwell: The Equations That Predicted Light, Radio, and Relativity

James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879) died at 48 of abdominal cancer, largely uncelebrated outside physics. Yet Einstein kept three portraits on his study wall: Newton, Faraday — and Maxwell. Maxwell's four equations, published in 1865, unified electricity and magnetism into a single force, predicted that light is an electromagnetic wave, and implicitly required special relativity. All modern electromagnetic technology — radio, television, WiFi, microwaves — descends from his work.

Unifying Electricity and Magnetism

By the 1850s, Faraday's experiments had established that electricity and magnetism were related. Maxwell gave this relationship mathematical form. His 1865 paper 'A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field' presented the equations now known as Maxwell's equations: four differential equations governing electric and magnetic fields, their sources, and their mutual induction.

Predicting the Speed of Light

From his equations, Maxwell derived the speed of electromagnetic waves: the square root of 1/(ε₀μ₀), where ε₀ and μ₀ are the electric and magnetic constants. The result was 299,000 km/s — essentially the measured speed of light. Maxwell concluded that light itself is an electromagnetic wave. This was one of the greatest unifications in physics.

Statistical Mechanics

Maxwell also co-founded statistical mechanics with Boltzmann. The Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution describes the distribution of molecular speeds in a gas — a foundational result connecting microscopic molecular motion to macroscopic thermodynamic properties.

Color Photography

In 1861, Maxwell produced the first color photograph, demonstrating the three-color principle (red, green, blue) that all modern display technology uses.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

What are Maxwell's equations?

Maxwell's equations are four equations describing how electric and magnetic fields are generated and altered by charges, currents, and each other. They predict that changing fields produce electromagnetic waves traveling at the speed of light — unifying electricity, magnetism, and optics.

Why is Maxwell considered so important?

Einstein said Maxwell's work was the most significant change in the conception of reality in physics since Newton. Maxwell's equations predicted electromagnetic waves, led to the discovery of radio, and implied special relativity — all before Einstein was born.

What did Maxwell contribute to physics besides electromagnetism?

Maxwell co-founded statistical mechanics (Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of molecular speeds), produced the first color photograph using the three-color principle, and made important contributions to thermodynamics and the theory of Saturn's rings.
