Makoto Soejima

Makoto Soejima is a mathematics prodigy from Japan. Makoto Soejima won at least three International Mathematical Olympiad gold medals for Japan, competing in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Fewer than fifty competitors in the Olympiad's history have reached three golds, a threshold that requires sustained top-tier performance across several consecutive years of secondary school.

Mathematical precocity is the most studied form of giftedness, tracked for half a century by programmes such as the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth. Its value as a predictor is real but imperfect: many early standouts leave the field, and many major mathematicians were never identified as children.
