What the researchers tested

The case appeared in the journal Neurocase under the title "A case of hyperthymesia: rethinking the role of the amygdala in autobiographical memory", by Brandon A. Ally, Erin P. Hussey and Manus J. Donahue of Vanderbilt. The subject, identified in the paper by his initials, was a 20-year-old man.

The team did not take the ability on trust. They ran standard intelligence and memory batteries, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Wechsler Memory Scale, and then tested autobiographical recall across 80 dates spanning his life, separating what he genuinely remembered from what he could reconstruct. Accuracy rose sharply with age, reaching roughly 90 per cent from around his eleventh year onward.

The finding in the brain

Imaging produced the result that gave the paper its title. Compared with controls, the subject showed right amygdala hypertrophy of approximately 20 per cent, and connectivity between the amygdala and the hippocampus more than ten standard deviations above the comparison group.

The authors drew a conclusion that ran against the textbook account. The amygdala, they argued, and the right amygdala in particular, plays a vital part in encoding and retrieving autobiographical memory, probably by charging memories with emotional, social and self-relevant weight. Memory research had tended to treat the hippocampus as the centre of the story and the amygdala as a specialist in fear.

What the memory feels like from inside

The paper also recorded how he experiences recall, which is where hyperthymesia stops being a party trick. He described memories arriving as if the events had just happened, carrying vivid sensory detail, and reported retrieving them from a first-person perspective in eight or nine cases out of ten.

That is the characteristic signature of highly superior autobiographical memory: not a search through stored records but re-experience, apparently unbidden and effectively permanent. Only a small number of such cases have ever been documented and studied in detail.

Vanderbilt Medicine published its own account in August 2012, under the title "The Amazing Life and Memory of H.K.
