MEMORIA SUPERIOR

🇺🇸 H.K. Derryberry

What the researchers tested

The case appeared in the journal Neurocase under the title "A case of hyperthymesia: rethinking the role of the amygdala in autobiographical memory", by Brandon A. Ally, Erin P. Hussey and Manus J. Donahue of Vanderbilt. The subject, identified in the paper by his initials, was a 20-year-old man.

The team did not take the ability on trust. They ran standard intelligence and memory batteries, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Wechsler Memory Scale, and then tested autobiographical recall across 80 dates spanning his life, separating what he genuinely remembered from what he could reconstruct. Accuracy rose sharply with age, reaching roughly 90 per cent from around his eleventh year onward.

The finding in the brain

Imaging produced the result that gave the paper its title. Compared with controls, the subject showed right amygdala hypertrophy of approximately 20 per cent, and connectivity between the amygdala and the hippocampus more than ten standard deviations above the comparison group.

The authors drew a conclusion that ran against the textbook account. The amygdala, they argued, and the right amygdala in particular, plays a vital part in encoding and retrieving autobiographical memory, probably by charging memories with emotional, social and self-relevant weight. Memory research had tended to treat the hippocampus as the centre of the story and the amygdala as a specialist in fear.

What the memory feels like from inside

The paper also recorded how he experiences recall, which is where hyperthymesia stops being a party trick. He described memories arriving as if the events had just happened, carrying vivid sensory detail, and reported retrieving them from a first-person perspective in eight or nine cases out of ten.

That is the characteristic signature of highly superior autobiographical memory: not a search through stored records but re-experience, apparently unbidden and effectively permanent. Only a small number of such cases have ever been documented and studied in detail.

The man, not the case number

Vanderbilt Medicine published its own account in August 2012, under the title "The Amazing Life and Memory of H.K. Derryberry", which is where the initials in the scientific literature acquire a life. He was born at 27 weeks. The retinopathy that follows extreme prematurity left him completely blind, and he lives with cerebral palsy.

Beyond what those two publications set out, this page does not report on his private life, his family circumstances or his health. The sources used here are a medical case report and a university magazine feature, and they define the limits of what can responsibly be said.

Why one case can matter this much

Single-subject papers are usually treated as curiosities. This one carried weight because it combined three things that rarely appear together: a verified extraordinary ability, standardised testing that ruled out ordinary explanations, and structural imaging that identified a specific anatomical difference.

Hyperthymesia remains rare enough that each confirmed case adjusts the map. Derryberry's contribution to that literature is the amygdala: a structure long associated with emotion, placed by this study at the centre of how a life gets stored day by day.

Questions people ask about H.K. Derryberry

How old is H.K. Derryberry?

The Neurocase case report describes him as 20 years old at the time of testing in 2012, which places his birth year at about 1992.

What is hyperthymesia?

It is highly superior autobiographical memory: the ability to recall the events of almost any day of one's own life in detail, involuntarily and with a sense of re-experiencing them.

What did the brain scan show?

Right amygdala hypertrophy of approximately 20 per cent compared with controls, and amygdala-to-hippocampus connectivity more than ten standard deviations above the comparison group.

What is H.K. Derryberry's IQ?

The researchers administered the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, but no IQ score for him is stated in the sources used here.

Is H.K. Derryberry on Wikipedia?

He has no article of his own. His case is referenced in Wikipedia's article on hyperthymesia.

Is he blind?

Yes. He was born at 27 weeks and retinopathy of prematurity left him completely blind. He also lives with cerebral palsy.

Where is H.K. Derryberry now?

The sources used here document the 2012 case study and the Vanderbilt feature. They do not describe his life after that, and this page does not speculate.
