🇬🇧 Aurelien Hayman

Name a date since he was ten, and he can tell you what happened on it

Cardiff-born, Durham-educated, and the first Briton identified with highly superior autobiographical memory.

Aurelien Hayman was a 20-year-old Durham University student from Cardiff when he became the first British person identified with highly superior autobiographical memory. Give him a date since roughly his tenth year and he can describe the day: the weather, what he wore, what was in the charts. In September 2012 the BBC and Channel 4 introduced him to the public as the memory man who cannot forget.

What HSAM is

Highly superior autobiographical memory, also called hyperthymesia, describes people who recall an abnormally large number of their own life experiences in vivid detail. The American neurobiologists Elizabeth Parker, Larry Cahill and James McGaugh documented the first case in 2006, and defined the condition by two characteristics: spending an unusual amount of time thinking about one's own past, and an extraordinary ability to recall specific past events.

It is genuinely rare. Fewer than 100 people had been diagnosed worldwide as of 2021, and as of April 2016 only six cases had been confirmed in peer-reviewed articles. Brain imaging of the first documented case found enlarged temporal lobes and caudate nucleus, though later findings have not settled into a single account of what differs in these brains.

The British case

Hayman was the first person in Britain identified with the condition. Scans of his brain during memory tasks showed visual areas activating faster than expected, a detail recorded in the scientific literature summarised by the encyclopaedia entry used as a secondary source here.

His recall is dated rather than general. The research record describes it as covering practically every day since he was about ten, which matches the pattern reported in documented HSAM cases, where the ability appears in childhood and then simply continues.

'The Boy Who Can't Forget'

On 25 September 2012 Channel 4 broadcast a documentary built around him, "The Boy Who Can't Forget". The BBC covered him the same day under the headline "The memory man who cannot forget".

Television is a natural format for the condition, because it can be tested live: a presenter names a date, the subject describes it, and a researcher checks the answer against a diary or a newspaper. That is also why HSAM cases become briefly famous and then disappear from coverage, having proved the point that the programme was made to prove.

What is documented, and what is not

Firmly established: he is the first Briton identified with HSAM, he was a Durham University student from Cardiff, and he was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary broadcast on 25 September 2012, with BBC coverage the same day.

Not established here: his date of birth, the subject he read at Durham, the name of the research team that assessed him, and anything about his life since 2012. The research record derives a birth year of about 1992 from his age of 20 in 2012. This page makes no claim about his health beyond the condition he discussed publicly.

Why perfect recall is not a superpower

The scientific literature on HSAM is careful about what the condition does and does not confer. It is autobiographical: it concerns the events of a person's own life, not facts, names or examinable material, and documented cases do not show unusual performance on standard memory tests of unrelated information.

The people who have it also describe a cost. One of the two defining characteristics identified by the original researchers is spending excessive time thinking about the past, which is another way of saying that nothing recedes. That is the tension a programme called "The Boy Who Can't Forget" was named for, and it is the reason the condition interests neuroscientists rather than quiz shows.
