Vandana Shiva arrived at environmental activism through physics and philosophy, and the combination has made her one of the most intellectually formidable and politically controversial voices in the global movement. A trained physicist who completed her doctorate on the foundations of quantum theory, she pivoted to environmental and agricultural politics in the 1980s after watching the forests of the Himalayan foothills where she grew up being stripped for commercial timber. What she built from that pivot — the Navdanya seed bank, a critique of industrial agriculture that reaches from the farm to international trade law, and a philosophy she calls Earth Democracy — has influenced environmental movements on every inhabited continent.
She was born on November 5, 1952, in Dehradun, in what is now the state of Uttarakhand. Her father was a forest conservator and her mother a farmer who loved nature; both influences proved permanent. She earned her undergraduate and master's degrees in physics from Panjab University before completing a PhD in philosophy of science at the University of Western Ontario in 1978. The turning point came in the early 1980s when she participated in the Chipko movement — the remarkable campaign in which Indian women, many of them from subsistence farming communities, hugged trees to prevent commercial logging in the Himalayan forests. The movement's name derives from the Hindi word for "to hug" or "to cling." It was the first major ecofeminist protest movement in India, and it shaped Shiva's conviction that environmental destruction and the marginalization of women were not separate problems but the same problem viewed from different angles.
In 1984 she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology to provide independent scientific expertise to support grassroots environmental campaigns. In 1988 she founded Navdanya — meaning "nine seeds" in Hindi — initially as a program to document and conserve India's agricultural biodiversity, particularly the thousands of traditional rice and wheat varieties that were being displaced by Green Revolution monocultures. She argues that the Green Revolution, despite its short-term yield gains, destroyed soil ecosystems, created pesticide and fertilizer dependency, undermined water tables, and led to the economic marginalization of small farmers — producing a cascade of rural poverty and farmer suicides that she links directly to debt incurred purchasing patented seeds and agrochemicals from multinational corporations. Her opposition to genetically modified organisms is rooted in both ecological and political arguments: ecological because she believes GMO monocultures accelerate the loss of biodiversity, political because she argues that corporate patents on life forms represent a form of biopiracy and an enclosure of the commons that has dispossessed millions of small farmers of their most fundamental resource.
She has received the Right Livelihood Award (the so-called "Alternative Nobel") in 1993, the Sydney Peace Prize in 2010, and honorary doctorates from universities in multiple countries. She has written more than twenty books, including Staying Alive: Women, Ecology and Development (1988), Monocultures of the Mind (1993), Stolen Harvest (2000), and Who Really Feeds the World? (2016). She has been a persistent presence at international trade negotiations — particularly those dealing with intellectual property and agriculture — arguing on behalf of small farmers and developing nations against rules she sees as transferring biological wealth from the global South to multinational corporations in the North.
She is not without critics. Agricultural scientists have contested her claims about the Green Revolution and GMO safety, and some of her positions have been disputed within mainstream scientific consensus. But even critics acknowledge the consistency and scope of her challenge to the dominant paradigm of industrial agriculture, and the movements she has helped build have demonstrably changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of farmers across the Indian subcontinent.

Vandana Shiva matters because she insists on asking who pays the costs of industrial progress. The Green Revolution was celebrated as a triumph of technology and will — and for those measuring grain yields in the short term, it was. But Shiva looked at what it did to soil, to water, to the farmers who went into debt to buy patented seeds, to the five thousand varieties of rice that were abandoned in favor of a handful of high-yield monocultures — and she refused to call that progress.
