Two diplomas, eleven days

NPR previewed the double graduation in December 2018, when he was sixteen and on course to finish both. Good Morning America reported the outcome on 30 May 2019: a 17-year-old had graduated from Harvard eleven days after graduating from Ulysses High School.

The degree was in government, taken through Harvard's Extension School, the part of the university built for students who are not in residence on the undergraduate course. It is a real Harvard degree with its own admissions standards and its own name on the diploma, a distinction the coverage of his case generally made explicit.

Ulysses is a small town in western Kansas, a long way from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Moral did the coursework alongside high school, with periods of study on campus, supported by his parents Carlos and Julie Moral.

The arrangement is the unusual part. Most early-college stories involve leaving school and enrolling in a university full-time. Moral kept both timetables running in parallel for years, which requires an administrative tolerance from a school district as much as it requires ability from the student.

The Extension School is what made the parallel timetable mechanically possible. It admits students who are not in residence on the undergraduate course and lets a degree be assembled over time rather than across four continuous years in Cambridge, which is why a pupil enrolled in a Kansas school district could accumulate Harvard credit without withdrawing from his high school.

The follow-up is the rarest thing in this genre: a documented second act that worked. KAKE reported on 30 August 2022 that the Kansan who had graduated from high school and Harvard at the same time was now an attorney in Wichita, having passed the bar at twenty.

He also appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2022, which is the other form the afterlife of a prodigy story takes. The difference here is that the television booking followed a professional qualification rather than replacing one.

That is the argument early-college advocates make. The bottleneck for an able teenager is usually not intellectual but administrative, and Moral's case is the cleanest available illustration, because the timetable of one system never interrupted the other.
