🇺🇸 Cavan Sullivan

The youngest player ever to appear in a major North American professional league — with a Manchester City transfer written into his first contract

MLS debut at 14 years 293 days • record homegrown contract with Philadelphia Union • moves to Manchester City on his 18th birthday

Freddy Adu's record had stood for twenty years and was widely assumed to be untouchable: 14 years and 306 days, the youngest player ever to appear in Major League Soccer. On 17 July 2024, Philadelphia Union sent on a local boy against New England Revolution at 14 years and 293 days — thirteen days younger. It made Cavan Sullivan not merely the youngest player in MLS history but the youngest ever to appear in a regular-season game in any major North American professional league. Two months earlier he had signed a contract containing a clause that sends him to Manchester City on his eighteenth birthday.

Cavan Ayaz Sullivan was born in Philadelphia on 28 September 2009 into a family in which the game is close to a profession by inheritance. His father Brendan played professionally for six years and was All-Ivy at Penn; his mother Heike, of German and Bangladeshi descent, captained Penn's women's side. His grandfather Larry Sullivan was head coach at Villanova for sixteen years, his cousin Chris Albright played for the United States national team, and his older brother Quinn plays alongside him in the Philadelphia Union first team.

He joined the Union's academy at ten. By 2023 he had won the CONCACAF Boys' Under-15 Championship with the United States and the Generation Adidas Cup with his club. In March 2024, aged fourteen, he made his professional debut for Philadelphia Union II in MLS Next Pro, coming on in the 56th minute and providing an assist in the 86th.

On 9 May 2024 the Union signed him to a homegrown contract running to 2028 — reported as the most expensive homegrown deal in MLS history, and making him the fifth-youngest player ever to sign an MLS first-team contract. His family confirmed to ESPN that the deal contains a transfer clause taking him to Manchester City when he turns eighteen in September 2027. It is a structure European clubs have used before, but rarely for a fourteen-year-old and rarely so publicly.

The record debut followed in July 2024, and with it a burst of attention that would test an adult. Six days later he was named Most Valuable Player of the MLS Next All-Star Game after a goal and an assist in the East's 4-2 win.

His first MLS start came on 5 July 2025 at Nashville, aged fifteen years and 280 days — second-youngest starter in the league's history behind Adu. He played sixty minutes and picked up his first yellow card. His head coach at the time, Bradley Carnell, was careful about expectations: 'There's a lot of hype around Cavan, and at times he gets muscled off the ball, which is totally natural. So he's not quite where he needs to be from a physical standpoint, but he's a very talented kid.' That autumn the Union won the Supporters' Shield.

In November 2025 he scored for the United States at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, coming off the bench in the 62nd minute against Burkina Faso and settling the game in the 79th. Later in the group stage he converted a penalty against Tajikistan with a Panenka — a chipped, deliberately slow finish down the middle that requires a specific kind of nerve in a tournament match.

His breakthrough for the Union's first team came in February 2026: two goals and two assists in a 7-0 CONCACAF Champions Cup win over Defence Force. The 2026 club season has otherwise been difficult — Philadelphia were bottom of the league by late May, their manager was dismissed, and the interim coach appointed was Ryan Richter, a man who has worked with Sullivan since he was nine. 'He's been great in the three games: he's affecting the games and being decisive in the games,' Richter said in July 2026. 'He needs to take that step now, where it's not just things that look good, but it's being decisive, and he's done that in every game so far.'

Sullivan is eligible for the United States, Germany and Bangladesh, and has so far chosen the country of his birth at youth level. He has not yet been called into the senior United States squad. He watched the 2026 World Cup as a spectator — his first live match involving the senior national team. 'It was my first USA game,' he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. 'Just listening to the anthem and hearing 70,000 people singing, it was just truly sick to see, and I can't wait to be there one day.'

He has learned early to manage the noise that comes with being a fourteen-year-old professional. 'I do feel supported by the US fan base, and it is really cool to see. I love this country. I love representing it,' he said. 'But I'm not too focused on what critics or other people have to say, whether it's good or bad. I've said that for a while now: I'm just focused on myself and getting better.'

The Manchester City clause makes his next two seasons unusually legible. Most teenage careers are a question of whether the move comes; his is a question of what condition he arrives in. He turns eighteen in September 2027.

The Philadelphia Union's academy is the reason any of this was possible. The club runs one of the few fully integrated development structures in North American soccer, with its own school and a reserve team in MLS Next Pro that gives teenagers competitive minutes against adults years before a first-team debut would otherwise be plausible. Sullivan played professional matches at fourteen because there was a professional league level built for exactly that.

That structure is also what makes his record hard to repeat. In most of the world a fourteen-year-old cannot sign a professional contract at all; in North America the homegrown mechanism allowed a club to commit to a child it had trained since he was ten, and to negotiate his eventual sale before he had played a senior minute.

Cavan Sullivan matters because his record is not only a soccer record. Fourteen years and 293 days is the youngest anyone has appeared in a regular-season game in any major North American professional league — soccer, baseball, basketball, football or hockey. In a sporting culture built on college pipelines and draft ages, that is a structural anomaly.

The Manchester City clause is the other reason to watch. European clubs have long bought teenagers; writing the move into a fourteen-year-old's first professional contract turns a development question into a scheduled event, and makes the next two seasons an unusually public test of whether a career can be planned that far in advance.
