What happened
The Express Tribune reported the result on 29 August 2011 under a headline that stated the claim directly: a Taxila boy had set a world record with 28 As at O-Level. Zohaib Asad was 19, a student at Beaconhouse, and from Wah Cantonment in the Taxila area of Punjab.
The number is the point. A Cambridge O-Level candidate typically sits between eight and ten subjects; 28 requires entering, preparing for and sitting papers across several examination sessions. The Tribune noted that for some of them, among them world geography and travel and tourism in Pakistan, he had to gather the content independently, because the subjects were not taught to him.
The record he broke
The record he took had been set only months earlier, and also in Pakistan. In January 2011 the same newspaper reported that Ibrahim Shahid, a student from Islamabad, had scored 23 As across 24 O-Level subjects. By August, Zohaib Asad had gone five better.
This sequence, one Pakistani student taking the record from another inside a single year, is a recognisable pattern in the country's private examination sector. The O-Level record has changed hands repeatedly since, and subsequent holders have posted still higher totals. What has not changed is the level of attention: in Pakistan a record of this kind is national news and reaches the prime minister's office.
The prime minister's cheque
On 5 January 2012 the Express Tribune reported that the prime minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, had honoured the student who set the O-Level world record. The award was Rs1 million.
By then Zohaib Asad had already set out his own reading of what the achievement was for. The Tribune quoted him in 2011: “I see the problems of Pakistan in line with the political scenario, the economic condition and educational structure. I aspire to contribute in the economic sector and will join the ministry of finance one day.” His father, Syed Asad Ali, told the paper it was a pleasure that his son had done a great job, “not just for our family, Pakistan but the whole Muslim community”.
Where he went
The 2011 article recorded his intention to study abroad: higher studies in Canada, with the stated aim of returning to contribute to Pakistan's development. A McGill University newsroom item carrying the Pakistani report of the prime minister's honour places him at McGill in Montreal, studying economics and international development.
That is where the documented trail ends. No source used here follows him past 2012. Whether he completed the degree, whether he returned to Pakistan, and whether he ever joined the ministry of finance as he said he intended are all unrecorded in this material.
What a record like this measures
O-Level totals are a strange thing to compete on, and it is worth being clear about what they do and do not show. Twenty-eight A grades is a feat of sustained preparation, subject breadth and examination technique. It is not a measure of research ability, originality or intelligence, and Cambridge Assessment does not run the count as a competition.
What the totals do reflect is a system in which an ambitious student can enter far more subjects than a school curriculum contains, and in which doing so carries real prestige. Zohaib Asad's own account of his motivation, given to a newspaper at 19, was about Pakistan's economy rather than about the number itself. The number is what is documented; the intention is what he said.
