🇮🇹 Sara Curtis

Broke the 50m backstroke world record on two consecutive nights, at 19

26.63 in the semi-final • 26.56 in the final • European champion, Paris 2026

Sara Curtis arrived at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris with a lifetime best of 27.07 in the 50m backstroke. On the night of 12 August she swam 26.63 in the semi-final and took the world record off Australia's Kaylee McKeown. Twenty-four hours later she went faster still — 26.56 in the final, a European title and a second world record in as many nights. Across three rounds in the Olympic Aquatic Centre she had improved her own best by more than half a second, an enormous margin in a race that lasts less than half a minute.

Sara Curtis is an Italian sprint swimmer who was 19 years old when she became the world-record holder in the women's 50m backstroke. She came into the 2026 season as a sprinter of national standing rather than a global favourite; the 50m backstroke is not an Olympic event, but it is a World Championship discipline and its record is among the most tightly contested in the sport.

Her form arrived first at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome on 27 June 2026, where she swam 27.07 to set a European record. That was the time she carried into the European Aquatics Championships in Paris in August — quick, but roughly half a second outside the world mark.

On the evening of 12 August, in the semi-finals on day three at the Olympic Aquatic Centre, she stopped the clock at 26.63. The time took the world record away from Kaylee McKeown, who had held it since a swim in Budapest in 2023. Curtis appeared visibly shocked at the finish and was congratulated in the water by the Dutch world champion Marrit Steenbergen.

The following night she did it again. She won the European title in 26.56, lowering her own record less than a day after setting it, and confirming that the semi-final had been a floor rather than a ceiling.

She also swam a 52.29 leg as Italy took silver in the women's 4x100m freestyle behind the Netherlands, closing the championships with a world record, a continental title and a relay medal.

“I knew I was capable of doing it but I didn't expect it here, in this race, in this moment.”

“I can tell that I am super woman right now, it's unbelievable and I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight.”

Sara Curtis matters because of the shape of her breakthrough rather than its size alone. Sprint records normally fall by hundredths; she took more than half a second off her own best inside three rounds of one championship, then beat her own new world record the very next night. That pattern — improvement compounding within a single meet — is what separates a swimmer who has peaked from one who has just found a level.
