Justin Huang is a Texas teenager who, at seventeen, co-invented a device that uses ultrasonic sound waves to strip microplastics out of water — and won the Gordon E. The defining pollutant of the twenty-first century is nearly invisible. Microplastics — fragments smaller than five millimeters — have been found in oceans, drinking water, human blood and human lungs, and the world has no cheap, scalable way to get them out of water. In 2024, one of the most promising answers came not from a national laboratory but from two seventeen-year-olds in a Texas suburb.

Justin Huang and his research partner Victoria Ou, both students in The Woodlands, near Houston, designed a filtration device that does not use a filter at all. It uses sound.

Their invention directs ultrasonic waves — high-frequency sound beyond the range of human hearing — across flowing water. The acoustic force physically pushes suspended microplastic particles to one side of the stream, so that clean water passes on while the concentrated contaminants are trapped. No mesh to clog, no membrane to replace.

In laboratory testing, the device removed between 84 and 94 percent of suspended microplastic particles in a single pass — numbers that put a science-fair prototype in conversation with serious environmental engineering.

In May 2024, Huang and Ou presented the project, titled 'Harnessing Ultrasound for Microplastic Filtration,' at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles — the world's largest international pre-college science competition, where roughly 2,000 finalists from dozens of countries compete for more than $9 million in awards.

They left with the fair's highest honor: the Gordon E. Moore Award for Positive Outcomes for Future Generations, worth $50,000, named for the Intel co-founder. The pair also collected a $5,000 first-place award in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category.

The Moore Award is not given for cleverness alone; its criterion is in the name — work with positive outcomes for future generations. The judges' verdict was that acoustic microplastic filtration, invented by two high-schoolers, was the project most likely to matter to the world their generation will inherit.

National coverage followed, from Houston television to environmental outlets like Grist, which framed the pair as a different kind of youth activist: teenagers who responded to an ecological crisis not with a protest sign but with an engineering solution.

Huang and Ou have said they are working on scaling the system up — refining the design so that what worked in a laboratory channel could one day work at the scale of a water-treatment plant, where acoustic arrays might intercept microplastics before they ever reach a tap or a river mouth.

The problem they chose gives the work its weight. Conventional water treatment was never designed to catch particles this small; most microplastic passes straight through municipal systems. An approach that concentrates particles without physical filters — cheap to run, nothing to clog — addresses precisely the gap that has frustrated professional engineers.

Huang's achievement places him in a lineage of ISEF laureates who used the fair as a launchpad: past winners have gone on to found companies, publish landmark research and win the prizes of adult science. The Gordon E. Moore Award, in particular, has become a marker for teenagers whose ideas outgrow the exhibition hall.

He shares every step of the achievement with Ou — the collaboration itself is part of the story. Two students, one problem, and a piece of physics repurposed into an environmental tool: it is the kind of partnership that science fairs exist to produce.

The scale of the competition frames the achievement. ISEF is the Olympics of high-school science: winners of hundreds of regional and national fairs across dozens of countries converge with projects vetted by professional scientists, competing for more than nine million dollars in awards. To take the single top prize is to be judged, in that year, the most consequential young scientific mind in the world's largest pipeline of them.

The physics the pair harnessed — acoustophoresis, the movement of particles under acoustic radiation force — is an active field of professional research, more commonly applied in microfluidics and medical laboratories than in environmental engineering. The insight was one of translation: taking a laboratory technique for sorting cells and asking whether it could sort pollution out of a water supply. That instinct for transplanting tools across fields is precisely what distinguishes inventive scientists from proficient students.

Huang's Texas roots are part of the story too. The Woodlands sits in the orbit of Houston — a region whose economy was built on petrochemicals, the industry whose products become the world's microplastics. Two students from that region building the machine that cleans plastic from water is the kind of generational symmetry that gave the story its national resonance.

Whether the ultrasonic filter becomes infrastructure or remains a brilliant proof of concept, Huang's seventeenth year already carries a rare distinction: he looked at one of the planet's most stubborn pollution problems and moved it, measurably, toward a solution — before finishing high school.
