Early Life and Displacement
Raised in a middle-class family, Petan spent his formative years moving across shifting borders. Following his early childhood in Zagreb, where his father operated a city-centre hotel, the family relocated to Maribor in 1940. They later sought refuge in Trieste during the regional turmoil of 1941, only to return to Maribor following the conclusion of the war. These years of movement provided a backdrop to his eventual development as an observer of political and social structures.

Upon his release from a nine-year sentence in 1951, Petan shifted his focus to formal education. He attended the University of Ljubljana for economics before transitioning to the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television to study directing. By the late 1950s, he emerged as a significant figure in the local arts scene, collaborating with Bojan Štih and Jože Javoršek at the Drama theatre. His involvement with Stage 57, an alternative theatre collective co-founded with Dane Zajc, Taras Kermauner, and Dominik Smole, served to challenge the cultural constraints imposed by the Titoist regime until the state dissolved the troupe in 1964.
Literary Output and Public Service
Beyond his directing credits, Petan was an exceptionally productive author. He published over 60 books in Slovene, with a substantial portion of his work focusing on aphorisms. His writing reached a diverse audience, appearing in numerous foreign languages, particularly Croatian. In addition to his creative endeavors, he took on a high-level administrative role, serving as the Director General of the Slovenian National Radio and Television Broadcast from 1992 to 1994.
