Yūto Nagatomo

Yūto Nagatomo established himself as a prominent full back over a decade of European competition, most notably during an extensive seven-year tenure at Inter Milan. As Japan's second-most capped international footballer with 146 appearances, he has maintained a consistent presence in the Samurai Blue squad since his 2008 debut, competing in five consecutive World Cup tournaments.

Early Career and Move to Italy

Born in 1986 in Saijo, Nagatomo attended Meiji University before launching his professional career with FC Tokyo. He earned his first senior appearance in the 2007 J.League Cup and officially signed in 2008. His domestic success included a 2009 J.League Cup title. In July 2010, he transferred to Serie A club Cesena on loan. Following strong performances, the club signed him permanently in January 2011 before immediately loaning him to Inter Milan.

Tenure at Inter Milan

Nagatomo became the first East Asian player to represent Inter Milan, debuting in February 2011 against Roma. Over seven years, he recorded over 200 appearances. He contributed to a 2011 Coppa Italia victory and demonstrated tactical flexibility across the defensive line. During the 2013-14 season, he reached a career peak with five goals and six assists. He turned down an offer from Manchester United in 2016 to extend his stay with the Italian side.

Success in Turkey and France

In January 2018, Nagatomo moved to Galatasaray, initially on loan before securing a permanent deal. His time in Turkey proved successful, yielding consecutive league titles in 2018 and 2019, alongside a Turkish Cup and a Turkish Super Cup in 2019. He moved to Ligue 1 club Marseille on a free transfer in August 2020, debuting for the team in a September match against Lille.

International Milestones

Nagatomo has represented Japan at the 2008 Olympic Games and in five World Cups between 2010 and 2026. He played a key role in the 2011 Asian Cup victory and the 2019 runner-up finish. In 2013, he received the AFC Asian International Player of the Year award. He eventually returned to his original club, FC Tokyo, in September 2021.
