Turkish sport shooter (born 1973)

A 10-metre air pistol mixed team silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris transformed Yusuf Dikeç into a global internet sensation. The Turkish marksman, then aged 51, drew widespread attention for his minimalist approach, competing without specialized visors or bulky ear protectors while keeping one hand casually tucked inside his trouser pocket.

Military Career and Training

Born in 1973 in the Taşoluk village of the Göksun district, Dikeç completed his primary schooling locally before finishing secondary education in Göksun. His professional life began in 1994 when he joined the Military School of Gendarmerie in Ankara. After graduation, he served as a corporal in Mardin. He returned to the Military School of Gendarmerie in 1999, graduating as a sergeant. His service took him through the Gendarmerie Special Public Security Command and an appointment at Jandarma Gücü, the sports club of the Turkish Gendarmerie. He also pursued formal studies in physical education and sports at Gazi University.

Ascent in Competitive Shooting

Dikeç transitioned into sport shooting in 2001, representing both the military and national teams. He established himself as a dominant figure in Turkey, setting multiple national records. His international reputation grew significantly in 2006 at the CISM Military World Championships in Rena, Norway, where he set a world record in the 25-metre center-fire pistol event with a score of 597 points. By 2012, he achieved further success by winning bronze in the 10-metre air pistol at the ISSF World Cup Final in Bangkok, Thailand.

European and Olympic Records

His 2013 performance at the European Shooting Championships in Osijek, Croatia, yielded double gold in the 25-metre standard and center-fire pistol events, alongside various team medals. Following his viral 2024 Olympic performance, he continued his success in 2025 by winning a silver medal at the ISSF World Cup in Munich and securing gold medals in both individual and team categories at the European 10-metre Events Championships in Osijek.

The 2024 Paris Olympics saw Dikeç gain unexpected fame for his nonchalant posture, which many observers compared to characters like James Bond or John Wick. By winning silver alongside Şevval İlayda Tarhan, he became Turkey's oldest Olympic medalist.
