The excavation of the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian provided the foundation for a career that defined vertebrate paleontology in China. Born in 1897 in Hua Prefecture, Yang Zhongjian developed a specialized focus on fossil remains that influenced the classification of numerous dinosaur species across the twentieth century until his death in 1979.
Academic Foundation
Yang Zhongjian completed his foundational education at Peking University in 1923. He subsequently pursued advanced studies in Germany, earning a doctorate from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 1927. These dual academic experiences prepared him for a career balancing rigorous field excavation with institutional leadership roles at institutions including Chongqing University and Peking University.

From 1933, Yang led expansive research into Chinese fossil records, a pursuit he maintained for four decades. He managed the systematic identification of significant specimens, including the prosauropods Lufengosaurus and Yunnanosaurus, the ornithopod Tsintaosaurus, and the sauropod Mamenchisaurus. His documentation of Chialingosaurus established the first record of a stegosaur within China.
Institutional Leadership and Recognition
Beyond his field research, Yang served as a curator and administrator, directing the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology and the Beijing Natural History Museum. His standing in the scientific community was formalized in 1955 when he was named an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also held membership in the Academia Sinica and served as a deputy to the National People's Congress.
