Early Career and Performance
Before his shift into executive management, Yang Hyun-suk gained experience as a dancer in groups such as the crew known as Spark, often cited as the first breaking dance group in Korea, and Park Nam Jung and friends. He joined Seo Taiji and Boys in 1991 alongside Seo Taiji and Lee Juno. The trio became central figures in the domestic music scene, achieving significant recognition for the track Nan Arayo. After the group parted ways in 1996, he launched a solo musical career, which included a release featuring a composition by Seo Taiji.

In 1996, Yang founded YG Entertainment, eventually building it into the fourth-largest record label in South Korea. As chairman and executive producer, he oversaw the development of numerous acts including Jinusean, 1TYM, Wheesung, Gummy, Seven, Big Bang, 2NE1, Winner, iKon, Tablo, Epik High, Lee Hi, Blackpink, Treasure, and Psy. He maintained an active role in production, later noting his involvement in the specific creative aspects of the group BabyMonster.
Legal Challenges and Leadership Shifts
By 2019, Yang Hyun-suk faced scrutiny following controversies surrounding the Burning Sun scandal. Legal proceedings followed, during which he was acquitted of blackmail charges. However, in November 2023, the Seoul High Court overturned an earlier acquittal regarding allegations of coercing trainees into changing testimonies. He received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for one year.
