Corporate Restructuring

Yang initiated significant cultural shifts within the company, moving away from the prevailing Chinese business model where bonuses were distributed equally regardless of performance. He implemented clear job descriptions and formal performance evaluations. To foster a modern workplace environment, he discouraged the use of formal titles, mandated professional dress codes, and established strict telephone etiquette protocols for his staff.

Distribution and Strategy

Recognizing the complexities of the vast Chinese market, Yang overhauled Lenovo's sales operations. He pivoted from direct sales to a reliance on independent agents, reducing his internal sales force from over 100 to 18 people. This network relied on centralized monitoring of inventory, pricing, and cash flow, bolstered by training partnerships with Microsoft and Intel.

International Relations and Leadership

In 2005, Yang coordinated a strategic partnership with Microsoft to preload Windows on Lenovo computers in China, countering software piracy. He also navigated geopolitical scrutiny in the United States, specifically during 2006 when the U.S. State Department faced criticism for purchasing Lenovo hardware. Yang publicly defended the company against allegations of government control, emphasizing its history of competing against state-owned enterprises.
