William Gilbert

English physician, physicist and natural philosopher (1544-1603)

William Gilbert worked in physics at a period when the field was still deciding what counted as an answer.

William Gilbert was born at Colchester in 1544. His recorded nationality is United Kingdom. He was educated at St John's College.

This was the period in which observation began to outrank inherited authority, and in which printing let a result reach readers who would never meet its author.

His research centred on astronomy, electricity and magnetism.

In physics the decisive move is usually not the theory but the apparatus built to test it.

Like many of his contemporaries, William Gilbert moved between physics, natural history and astronomy without regarding the boundaries as real.

The United Kingdom setting is not incidental. National academies, funding and language decided which findings travelled and which stayed local, in this period as in ours.

The measure that matters is durability. Results that survive re-examination become the floor of a discipline, and it is on that floor that everything afterwards is built.

Death came in 1603, at 59. By then the contribution had passed into the settled body of physics, where it is used without being credited - the surest sign that it was right.
