His career includes several international academic roles. During the fall of 2002, he acted as a visiting assistant professor at Texas A & M University. Following his time in Münster, he relocated to the University of Nottingham in 2007. He spent four years at Nottingham, initially serving as a lecturer before advancing to the position of reader. He returned to the University of Münster in 2011 to accept a professorship in mathematics.

Winter specializes in operator algebras, specifically focusing on C*-algebras. His research output includes various collaborative works, such as the 2008 paper on Z-stable ASH algebras co-authored with Andrew Toms. He has also investigated nuclear dimension and minimal dynamics.
