Wahlforss attended the Swedish Normal School in Helsinki before enrolling at the University of Technology in 1911. His academic focus centered on mechanical engineering, with an orientation toward the textile industry. He balanced his studies with an active social life, eventually completing his master's thesis on textile factory economics with an excellent rating in March 1916. His early practical training included internships at Finlayson and the Hietalahti Shipyard.

His professional life began in 1916 as a draftsman for the Nobel arms company in Saint Petersburg. By 1917, he served as a technical manager at Turun Rautateollisuus and later at the Fiskars rolling mill under Albert Lindsay von Julin. During the 1918 Civil War, he served as a leader in the Pohja Civil Guard, participating in military actions with the White Guard.
Industrial Leadership and Challenges
In 1921, Wahlforss took the role of General Manager at the Lehtoniemi shipyard. Facing a loss of Russian markets, he successfully improved the company's financial standing, shifting it from a significant deficit to profitability. In 1923, he pivoted to the textile industry by acquiring the Turun Verkatehdas. This venture proved difficult, and after failing to secure profitability, he sold the company to the Nordic Wool Company in 1924.
