Bungei claimed a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton, trailing André Bucher. He reached a personal best time of 1:42.34 minutes in Rieti in 2002. His performance at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow resulted in a gold medal, where he outperformed rivals Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Yuriy Borzakovskiy. Additionally, he participated in the 4 × 800 metres relay, helping to set a world record for the event.

His Olympic tenure included representing Kenya at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, followed by his victory in Beijing four years later. Throughout his professional track seasons, he maintained a training base near Verona, Italy. His family connections in the sport are extensive; he is a second cousin to Wilson Kipketer and his mother is a cousin to Henry Rono. His brother, Sammy Kurgat, notably won the 2008 Cologne Marathon.
