A former soldier who joined the People's Liberation Army at age 15, Wang Jianlin rose from regimental commander to become one of China's most significant business magnates. Through his leadership of the Dalian Wanda Group, he transformed a regional property developer into a global conglomerate spanning real estate, cinema, and international entertainment holdings.
Military Foundation and Transition
Born in 1954 in Mianyang, Sichuan, Wang entered military service in 1970. He spent 17 years in the People's Liberation Army, serving in Chengdu and the Shenyang Military Region before achieving the rank of regimental commander. Following his departure from the military in 1986, he accepted a position as an office administrator for the Xigang District in Dalian. This administrative role provided the platform for his transition into commercial development.

In 1988, Wang secured an $80,000 loan to acquire Xigang Residential Development. By 1992, he oversaw the company’s transition into a public entity, rebranding it as Dalian Wanda. Under his direction, the firm developed millions of square metres of commercial space across China, including shopping plazas, luxury hotels, and department stores. He significantly expanded the group's international reach by acquiring the American-based AMC Entertainment in 2012 for US$2.6 billion, making Wanda the world's largest cinema operator at the time.
Global Media and Entertainment Assets
Wang diversified his portfolio by entering the global entertainment sector. He purchased Legendary Entertainment and pursued ventures in Spain, including the purchase of the Edificio España in Madrid and a 20 per cent stake in the football club Atlético Madrid. In 2014, he launched a major real estate project in Qingdao. His ambitions extended to acquiring Dick Clark Productions, which would have granted the group rights to the Golden Globe Awards, though he also maintained a focus on direct competition with established theme park operators in the Chinese market.
Political Engagement and Philanthropy
A member of the Chinese Communist Party since 1976, Wang has balanced his corporate leadership with various political roles. He has served as a deputy to the National People's Congress and as a standing member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. His philanthropic contributions are extensive, including a billion-yuan donation to Nanjing for the Porcelain Tower reconstruction and funding for the restoration of the Electric Fountain in Beverly Hills. He holds the view that entrepreneurs must maintain close communication with government officials to ensure development goals are understood.
