Wang Xing

Chinese businessman

Meituan shares fell 7.1 percent on 3 May 2021 after a social media post sparked a market reaction that erased 36.98 billion dollars from the company's valuation. This incident, involving a Tang Dynasty poem regarding historical book burning, highlights the precarious position of technology executives operating within the regulatory and political landscape of the People's Republic of China.

Early Ventures and Transitions

Upon returning to China, Wang explored various social networking concepts. His initial startup, Duoduouyou, focused on the student population but failed to gain traction. A subsequent project, Youzitu, sought to assist Chinese students living abroad but eventually ceased operations. In 2005, he launched Xiaonei, a site modeled after Facebook. Financial constraints led to the sale of the platform, which was later rebranded as Renren.

Microblogging and Market Consolidation

Wang established Fanfou in 2007, serving as its chief executive officer until 2010. This platform functioned as a microblogging service. Following a government shutdown due to content concerns, the site returned to operation, though it struggled to compete against emerging market players such as Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo. In 2010, Wang founded Meituan, a group-buying enterprise modeled after the Groupon business structure. The company significantly expanded its reach in 2015 by merging with Dianping.

Regulatory and Political Scrutiny

The business operations led by Wang have faced increased attention from the State Administration of Market Regulation. Following the 2021 controversy over his digital activity, the firm was subjected to an anti-monopoly investigation. Additionally, the Beijing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau initiated scrutiny into the company's labor practices. These events coincided with broader shifts in the oversight of major technology platforms within the country.
