Walter Carnielli

Brazilian logician

Walter Alexandre Carnielli, born in Campinas, Brazil, in 1952, has established a career as a mathematician, philosopher, and university teacher. His academic output centers on many-valued logic, paraconsistent logic, and combinatorics. Throughout his career, he has maintained a long-standing association with the State University of Campinas, where he earned both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees.

Academic Formation and Early Work

Carnielli completed his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees at the State University of Campinas before earning his Ph.D. in 1984 under the supervision of Newton da Costa. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook post-doctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, following an invitation from Leon Henkin.

Contributions to Logic

His research focuses on the proof theory and semantics of many-valued and paraconsistent systems. He developed a tableau method for many-valued logic that generalized existing approaches. His work on possible-translations semantics provided a new interpretive framework for paraconsistent logic, while his exploration of the logics of formal inconsistency bridged the gap between paraconsistent theory and applications in computer science.

Combinatorics and Modulated Logics

Carnielli has published on finite and infinite combinatorics, including research on rook domain problems. In collaboration with A. M. Sette and P. A. Veloso, he developed modulated logics, a system designed for the formalization of qualitative reasoning through generalized quantifiers. His broader research interests encompass model theory, foundations of quantum computation, and the methodology of combining logical systems.

Institutional Leadership and Recognition

Carnielli served three terms as Director for the Centre for Logic, Epistemology and the History of Science at the University of Campinas and held the presidency of the Brazilian Logic Society. He has served on the editorial boards of publications such as Studia Logica and the Journal of Applied Logic. His research has been supported by an Alexander von Humboldt grant, and he was awarded the Telesio-Galilei Gold Medal in 2012.
