The formation of the electrical engineering group Brown, Boveri & Cie. on 2 October 1891 in Baden marked the start of a major expansion in industrial infrastructure. Walter Boveri co-founded the firm with Charles Eugene Lancelot Brown, transforming the enterprise into an international entity through rigorous commercial management and strategic investment in power generation projects across the region.
Early Career and Education
Born in 1865 in Bamberg, Germany, Boveri was the third of four sons of the doctor Theodor Boveri. At seventeen, he enrolled in the Royal Engineering School in Nuremberg, graduating in 1885. He subsequently relocated to Switzerland, where he initially served as a volunteer before becoming an assembly manager for electrical systems at the Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon.

In 1887, technical director Charles Eugene Lancelot Brown proposed establishing an independent business. Boveri spent years seeking capital, ultimately securing a loan from his future father-in-law, Zurich silk industrialist Conrad Baumann, prior to his 1891 marriage to Victoire Baumann. The two partners signed an association agreement in December 1890, selecting Baden as their operational headquarters.
Infrastructure and Power Utilities
Boveri expanded his reach beyond manufacturing into the energy sector. He founded the power company Olten-Aarburg AG in 1894 to support the Ruppoldingen hydro-electric plant, an organization later known as Aare Tessin AG. In 1895, he launched Motor AG, which later transitioned into Motor-Columbus, to manage the complex financing and construction of power plants.
Leadership and Public Service
Following the retirement of Brown, Boveri served as Chairman of the board for BBC from 1911 until his death in 1924. His influence extended to the public sector; he joined the board of Swiss Federal Railways due to his involvement in electrification initiatives and participated in municipal politics in Baden. During World War I, he led the Société Suisse de Surveillance Economique.
