Corporate Career
Cramer began his executive tenure in 1919 when he accepted the role of managing director at Kammgarnspinnerei Gautzsch AG. By 1923, he expanded his influence within the textile sector by joining the board of directors at the Leipziger Kammgarnspinnerei Stöhr & Co. AG. These roles placed him at the center of the local industry during the economic shifts of the early twentieth century.

During the first half of the 1940s, Cramer engaged in civilian resistance activities alongside Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, the former mayor of Leipzig. Following the unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair on 20 July 1944, authorities apprehended Cramer on 22 July. He subsequently faced trial before the Volksgerichtshof, which delivered a conviction on charges of treason and high treason.
Execution and Legacy
The court sentenced Cramer to death for his involvement in the failed plot. On 14 November 1944, he was executed by hanging at Plötzensee Prison in Berlin. Following the end of the war, the city of Leipzig honored his memory; in 1945, a street in the Gohlis neighborhood was named Walter-Cramer-Straße, and in 1996, a monument was unveiled in the Johannapark.
