Wage Rudolf Soepratman

Indonesian composer and songwriter

The melody and lyrics for the Indonesian national anthem, "Indonesia Raya," were composed by Wage Rudolf Soepratman, a musician whose work became a cornerstone of the nation’s political identity. Born in Jatinegara, Jakarta, in 1903, his trajectory spanned roles as an educator, instrumentalist, and journalist before his untimely death in Surabaya at the age of 35.

Early Life and Education

Born to Sergeant Djoemeno Senen Sastrosoehardjo and Siti Senen, he was the seventh of nine children. His early education began at the Budi Utomo elementary school in Cimahi. Later, he moved to Makassar to live with his sister, Rukiyem Supratiyah van Eldik, where he attended the Europeesche Lagere School. During this period, he adopted the name Rudolf to secure rights comparable to Dutch residents. He was eventually removed from the institution after authorities determined he lacked European descent. He completed his formal training in a Malay language school and subsequently attended a Teachers' College to become an auxiliary instructor.

Musical Development and Career

His introduction to music was facilitated by his brother-in-law, Willem Mauritius van Eldik, who gifted him a violin for his seventeenth birthday in 1920. Soon after, the two co-founded a jazz band called Black & White, which performed at private events throughout Makassar. Professionally, Soepratman balanced his musical pursuits with a career in journalism, working for the publication Sin Po.

Composition and Suppression of Indonesia Raya

The national anthem was introduced on 28 October 1928, during the Second Indonesian Youth Congress. Following its debut, the composition was adopted by Sukarno's PNI. In 1929, Tio Tek Hong produced the first recordings of the song, with Soepratman maintaining the copyright. The anthem's popularity prompted the Dutch colonial government to impose a formal ban in 1930, leading to the mass seizure of unsold record stocks. The song's text underwent revision in 1944, and the musical arrangement reached its current form in 1958.

Final Years and Recognition

Soepratman began suffering from poor health in 1933, leading to his resignation from Sin Po. He relocated to Cimahi and Palembang before settling in Surabaya. He passed away on 17 August 1938. His remains were originally interred in Kapas Public Cemetery and were subsequently transferred to the Tambak Segaran Wetan cemetery in 1956. In 1971, the Indonesian government granted him the title of National Hero and awarded him the Bintang Mahaputra Utama kelas III.
