Wael Ghonim gained international prominence in 2011 for his role in mobilizing demonstrators during the Egyptian Revolution. As one of two administrators for the Facebook page "We are all Khaled Said," he helped organize protests against the government. His subsequent 11-day detention by state authorities transformed him into a symbolic figure for pro-democracy movements across the Middle East.
Education and Early Career
Born in Cairo in 1980, Ghonim spent part of his childhood in Abha, Saudi Arabia, before returning to Egypt at age 13. He graduated with a BS in computer engineering from Cairo University in 2004. He later earned an MBA with honors in marketing and finance from the American University in Cairo in 2008. His professional path began at Gawab, where he served as Marketing and Sales Manager between 2002 and 2005. He subsequently founded the financial portal Mubasher.info.

Ghonim held various roles within Google, beginning as a Regional Marketing Manager for the Middle East and North Africa in 2008, based in Egypt. In January 2010, he transitioned to the position of Head of Marketing for the region, operating from Dubai Internet City. In 2014, he joined Google Ventures as an Entrepreneur in Residence, a role he maintained until late that year.
Activism and The Revolution
In 2010, Ghonim established a Facebook page dedicated to Khaled Said, an Egyptian man who died following police torture. The page became a hub for coordinating anti-government actions, including Silent Stands and public demonstrations starting on 25 January 2011. Following his release from 11 days of secret detention, he addressed crowds in Tahrir Square and emphasized that the revolution functioned like a collaborative digital project where individual contributions mattered more than single leaders.
Post-Revolution Initiatives
Following the 2011 uprising, Ghonim focused on social entrepreneurship and education. He published his memoir, Revolution 2.0, in 2012. That same year, he founded Tahrir Academy, a nonprofit focused on educational development in Egypt. He later co-founded Parlio in 2015, a social media platform that was acquired by Quora in March 2016. He has served as a non-resident senior fellow at the Harvard Ash Center.
