During the January Uprising of 1863-64, he composed the song 'Jak to na wojence ładnie', a work that maintained long-term popularity. His poetic collections include 'Krople czary', published in 1865, 'Szkice helweckie i Talia', 'Piołuny', and 'Kochankowie ojczyzny'. His dramatic writing saw the publication of 'Karlińscy' in 1874 and 'Joanna Grey' in 1875. He was also an active translator, working on projects involving the music historian P. Cornelius, and various poetic texts including those by Adam Mickiewicz, Victor Hugo, and Ludwig Foglar. He contributed reviews and articles to publications like 'Ruch literacki' and 'Tygodnik ilustrowany'.

Tarnowski’s life was characterized by significant travel, encompassing tours through the Middle East and Asia. He spent time living in India, China, and Japan, reflecting a cosmopolitan trajectory that was common for virtuoso performers of the era. His life concluded abruptly in 1878 while he was returning from Japan.
