Early Career and Education
Colao pursued academic training at Bocconi University before completing an MBA at Harvard Business School. His professional trajectory began at the investment bank Morgan Stanley in London. In 1986, he moved to the Milan offices of McKinsey & Co. As a partner, he specialized in industrial goods, telecommunications, and media, while also managing recruitment initiatives for the firm.

In 1996, Colao joined Omnitel Pronto Italia, advancing to the role of chief operating officer prior to its integration into Vodafone. By 2001, he held the position of regional CEO for Southern Europe, joining the global board the following year. Although he departed in 2004 to serve as CEO of RCS MediaGroup, he returned to Vodafone in 2006. He assumed the global CEO role in July 2008, succeeding Arun Sarin.
Strategic Restructuring
During his leadership, Colao oversaw a $130 billion exit from the company's joint venture with Verizon in the United States. He directed an $18 billion acquisition of German and Eastern European cable networks from Liberty Global, establishing the company as the primary broadband provider in Europe. He concluded his tenure in October 2018, later serving as a senior advisor for General Atlantic.
Public Service and Government
In April 2020, the Italian government appointed Colao to lead a task force tasked with managing the second phase of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Following this, he served as the Minister for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition within the cabinet of Prime Minister Mario Draghi from 2021 to 2022. He remains a reserve officer in the Carabinieri.
