Vincenzo Fagiolo

The recognition of Vincenzo Fagiolo as Righteous Among the Nations in 1983 emerged from his wartime efforts to shelter Jewish individuals from Nazi forces. Working alongside Father Pietro Palazzini at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the young priest actively participated in rescue operations while serving the Diocese of Rome during the early 1940s.

Early Formation and Education

Born in 1918 in the Italian town of Segni, Fagiolo pursued an ecclesiastical career that spanned over half a century. He received his education at the Seminary of Segni, the Seminary of Anagni, and the Pontifical Roman Seminary. His academic path culminated at the Pontifical Lateran University, where he secured doctorates in theology and canon law. He was ordained as a priest on 6 March 1943.

Ecclesiastical Appointments

Following his initial work in the Diocese of Rome, where he served from 1943 to 1971, Fagiolo expanded his administrative role within the Latin Church. Pope Paul VI appointed him Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto on 20 November 1971. During his tenure in Chieti, which lasted until 1984, he also occupied the position of Vice-President of the Episcopal Conference of Italy from 1979.

Vatican Administration and Cardinalate

In December 1990, Pope John Paul II appointed Fagiolo as the President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. His administrative career in the Vatican continued until his elevation to the College of Cardinals. He was proclaimed Cardinal-Deacon of S. Teodoro during the consistory held on 26 November 1994. He concluded his service as president of the council shortly thereafter in December 1994.
