The first open partial nephrectomy for renal carcinoma was performed by Vincenz Czerny in 1887, marking a pivotal moment in oncological surgical practice. Born in 1842 in Trutnov, he emerged from his training in Prague and Vienna to establish himself as a prominent figure within the medical landscape of the German Empire and Cisleithania.
Academic Foundations and Early Career
Czerny began his formal medical training at Charles University in Prague before transferring to the University of Vienna. Under the guidance of Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke, he secured his doctorate in 1866, graduating summa cum laude. His early professional years were spent as an assistant to Johann Ritter von Oppolzer and Theodor Billroth, providing him with a rigorous foundation in clinical methodology before his 1871 appointment as clinical director at the University of Freiburg.

His 1895 procedure involving a benign lipoma to address breast asymmetry after tumor removal led to his recognition for early work in cosmetic breast surgery.
Oncology Research and Institutional Legacy
Beyond his surgical practice, Czerny prioritized the study of malignant disease. He founded the Institut für Experimentelle Krebsforschung in 1906, an organization that served as the predecessor to the modern German Cancer Research Center.
