The first Kenyan player to record a goal in the UEFA Champions League, Victor Wanyama established his professional career in Europe after emerging from the youth systems of Nairobi. Early Development and Belgian Beginnings
Educated at Kamukunji High School, Wanyama refined his skills through JMJ Academy and stints with Nairobi City Stars and AFC Leopards. After a brief period in 2007 with the Swedish club Helsingborg, he joined the Belgian side Beerschot AC in 2008. During his time in Belgium, he secured a four-year contract and played 51 matches, scoring two goals before his departure in 2011.

Wanyama completed a £900,000 transfer to Celtic in July 2011, becoming the first Kenyan to feature in the Scottish Premier League. He wore the number 67 to pay tribute to the 1967 European Cup-winning squad. His tenure included a notable 25-yard goal against Hearts and the decisive opening header in a 2–1 Champions League victory over Barcelona on 7 November 2012.
Premier League Stints
In July 2013, Wanyama joined Southampton for £12.5 million, marking the highest transfer fee ever paid for a player sold by a Scottish club at that time. He later reunited with manager Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur in June 2016 for £11 million. During his time in London, he reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final and earned recognition for a long-range goal against Liverpool in 2018.
Professional Evolution
Following his time in the Premier League, Wanyama moved to CF Montréal in March 2020. In 2025, he returned to Scotland to play for Dunfermline Athletic, reuniting with his former Celtic manager Neil Lennon. His career is marked by his transition from the Kenyan domestic league to sustained roles in top-tier European competitions.
