The determination of the atomic structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit earned Venkatraman Ramakrishnan the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. A chemist, biologist, and biophysicist by training, he has spent decades exploring the complex mechanisms of protein biosynthesis and molecular structure, transitioning from early research in theoretical physics to fundamental discoveries in biochemistry and molecular biology.
Academic Background and Transition
Born in 1952 in Chidambaram, India, Ramakrishnan began his higher education at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1971. Moving to the United States, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy in physics at Ohio University in 1976. Shortly after, he transitioned into biology, undertaking graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego.

Take the IQ test →Research into Ribosomal Structure
Ramakrishnan initiated his work on ribosomes as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University. Following this, he held a position as a staff scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory between 1983 and 1995. In 1995, he joined the University of Utah School of Medicine as a professor of biochemistry. His research reached a milestone in 1999 when his lab published the 5.5 angstrom resolution structure of the 30S subunit. He later determined the complete atomic structure of the 30S subunit and its complexes with antibiotics. Since moving to the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 1999, his work has expanded to include studies on histone and chromatin structure, as well as the use of cryogenic electron microscopy for translation research.
Leadership at the Royal Society
Ramakrishnan served as the President of the Royal Society from 2015 to 2020. During his tenure, he navigated the scientific community's response to Brexit and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. He consistently advocated for the importance of international scientific collaboration, warning that institutional isolation would hinder progress in addressing global health and climate issues.
