Living and working in Switzerland and Portugal, Valerio Olgiati maintains an architectural practice that consistently challenges traditional design frameworks. Born in 1958 in Chur, Switzerland, Olgiati completed his formative training at ETH Zurich. His professional trajectory is defined by a rigorous commitment to spatial theory and the intentional removal of historical or symbolic meaning from his built projects.
Architectural Foundation and Development
Olgiati credits his time residing in Los Angeles as the most influential phase of his professional development. This period provided a departure from his academic training at ETH Zurich, enabling him to perceive the physical world through formal, natural qualities rather than through the lens of historical tradition. This intellectual pivot materialized in his 2006 Iconographic Autobiography, an anthology of 55 illustrations that explored these spatial concepts.

Take the IQ test →Non-Referential Philosophy
In 2018, Olgiati and architectural theorist Markus Breitschmid published a treatise titled Non-Referential Architecture. The central argument posits that contemporary architecture in diverse societies must advance through fundamental insights gained from spatial experience, stripping structures of inherent, pre-existing meaning. Olgiati has successfully registered the term Non-Referential Architecture as a trademark, underscoring his proprietary approach to this design philosophy.
Practice and Academic Contribution
Olgiati manages his architecture office alongside his wife, Tamara. Beyond his private practice, he maintains a significant academic presence, having held teaching positions at Harvard University as the Kenzo Tange Chair, Cornell University, the AA in London, and ETH Zürich. He has served as a professor at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio since 2002. His work has received international exposure through solo exhibitions at institutions including the Royal Institute of British Architects and the National Museum of Modern Art.
