A career officer, he joined the Directorate of Army Intelligence before commanding the 4th Infantry Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment. Beyond his land-based roles, he qualified as a pilot for aircraft including the Northrop F-5, F-16, and Boeing 737-400. He participated in combat operations against the Communist Party of Thailand during the 1970s and attained the ranks of field marshal and marshal of the air force.

Since his formal coronation in May 2019, his rule has been characterized by the consolidation of royal assets and direct oversight of the Crown Property Bureau.
