Academic Trajectory
Born in 1819 in Hostomice, Treitz completed his medical education at the Jagiellonian University. His professional development included post-graduate research in Vienna under the tutelage of Joseph Hyrtl. In 1855, he established himself in Prague, where he served as a professor and director of the institute of pathological anatomy at Charles University for the remainder of his career.

Treitz identified several critical anatomical landmarks. His 1853 description of the suspensory muscle of the duodenum led to its recognition as the ligament of Treitz. His name is also associated with the angle of Treitz, which defines the sharp curve at the duodenojejunal junction, and the Treitz arch, a sickle-shaped peritoneal fold forming the boundary of the paraduodenal recess. Furthermore, he is cited in literature regarding the Treitz fascia, located behind the head of the pancreas, and the Treitz fossa, a subcaecal depression in the peritoneum, as well as the Treitz hernia involving the duodenojejunal region.
Final Years
Beyond his laboratory research and teaching responsibilities, Treitz engaged with the political tensions of the Austrian Empire, specifically through his involvement in the struggle for Czech nationalism. His life concluded on 27 August 1872 at the age of 53, when he took his own life by ingesting potassium cyanide. He was subsequently buried at Olšany Cemetery in Prague.
