The partnership between mechanic Václav Laurin and bookseller Václav Klement began in 1895 in Mladá Boleslav. Starting with bicycle production under the Slavia brand, the pair transitioned into motorcycle manufacturing by 1899. This collaboration eventually evolved into Laurin & Klement, an industrial enterprise that laid the technical foundations for what would later become the Škoda Auto automotive company.
Early Career and Training
Born in 1865 in Kamení, within the borders of Austria–Hungary, Laurin developed his foundational technical skills through a locksmith apprenticeship in Mladá Boleslav between 1883 and 1886. Seeking to deepen his engineering expertise, he traveled to Dresden in 1893 to study the design and operational principles of steam engines. These formative experiences in mechanical systems prepared him for his subsequent entry into the rapidly industrializing transport market.

Following his 1895 meeting with Václav Klement, Laurin shifted his focus toward commercial manufacturing. The duo initially produced bicycles, but quickly scaled their operations to include motorcycles by the turn of the century. By 1905, Laurin directed the engineering of the company's first automobile, the Laurin & Klement A, also known as a voiturette. His focus on mechanical innovation complemented Klement's commercial strategy, facilitating international exports and significant company growth.
Corporate Merger and Final Years
In 1925, the independent company was sold to the Škoda Works industrial conglomerate, resulting in the name change to Škoda Auto. Following this transaction, Laurin occupied the position of technical director until his death on 3 December 1930. While he remained involved with the firm until the end, he held no further operational authority over the company’s strategic direction. He died in Prague and was interred at the Old Cemetery in Mladá Boleslav.
