The 2001 doctoral thesis completed at the University of Haifa under the supervision of Alek Vainshtein marked the academic emergence of Toufik Mansour. Born in 1968 in Isfiya, Israel, he established himself as a specialist in algebraic combinatorics, eventually becoming the first professional mathematician from the Druze community.
Academic Formation
Mansour attended the École des Sœurs de Nazareth before pursuing higher education at multiple institutions, including the University of Haifa, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, LaBRI, and Chalmers University of Technology. His early training provided the foundation for his later work in discrete mathematics and its specific applications.

By 2003, Mansour joined the faculty at the University of Haifa, where he remained a professor. His administrative service included a tenure as department chair from 2015 to 2017. Beyond Haifa, he held positions at the Center for Combinatorics at Nankai University from 2004 to 2007 and contributed to The John Knopfmacher Center for Applicable Analysis and Number Theory at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Research and Editorial Contributions
His primary research interests center on permutation patterns, colored permutations, compositions, set partitions, and combinatorics on words. Mansour served as a founding editor for the journal Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, acting as editor-in-chief since its inception. He further facilitates academic exchange by chairing and organizing the annual International Conference on Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, a role he assumed in 2022.
Published Works
Mansour has authored several technical texts published by CRC Press. In 2010, he co-authored Combinatorics of Compositions and Words with Silvia Heubach. This was followed by his 2013 monograph, Combinatorics of Set Partitions. In 2015, he collaborated with Matthias Schork to produce the volume Commutation Relations, Normal Ordering, and Stirling Numbers.
