His focus shifted in 2003 toward medium-sized industrial companies. Notable holdings included a 49% stake in the German firm HWA AG, which he took public in 2007. HWA managed the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters program for Mercedes-Benz and contributed to the development of F3 engines and the SLS AMG GT3 racing car.

In 2009, Wolff entered the Formula One ecosystem by purchasing a share of the Williams F1 team and joining its board.
