Leadership Transition and Market Pressures
Following safety concerns at the Texas City refinery and in Alaska, internal pressure mounted to replace Lord Browne of Madingley. Although competitors for the position included John Manzoni and Robert Dudley, Hayward was named successor in early 2007. During his time as CEO, he oversaw BP's financial interests, including negotiations with Rosneft executive Igor Sechin regarding Russian oil deals.
Deepwater Horizon and Departure
Following the 20 April 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig, Hayward faced intense scrutiny regarding his management and public statements. His characterization of the spill as modest and his expressed desire to have his life back drew significant criticism.
