Early Education and Financial Foundations
Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1964, Fernandes attended The Alice Smith School before moving to England to board at Epsom College from 1976 to 1983. He later earned an accounting degree from the London School of Economics. His early professional path included an audit role at Virgin Atlantic and a position as financial controller at Virgin Communications. By 1991, he became an associate member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, achieving fellowship status in 1996.
Transition to Aviation
Following a tenure as an executive at Warner Music in Malaysia and as Vice President, ASEAN at Warner Music South East Asia, Fernandes exited the music industry to enter the aviation sector. With the counsel of Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, he acquired AirAsia, then a subsidiary of DRB-Hicom. He invested personal capital to cover US$11 million in debt. Fernandes expanded his commercial interests beyond aviation by founding Tune Group. In 2007, he established the Tune Hotels chain, applying a no-frills model to the hospitality sector. His portfolio has also included ownership in the Caterham Group and a majority stake in Queens Park Rangers F.C. until 2023. Additionally, he hosted the first season of The Apprentice Asia in 2013 and ventured into food delivery services in 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Motorsport and Public Recognition
His involvement in motorsport included the founding of the Caterham F1 team, which began racing in 2010.
